The State-Level Nonlinear Effects of Government Spending Shocks in the US: The Role of Partisan Conflict

Utilising a nonlinear (regime-switching) mixed-frequency panel vector autoregression model, we study the effects of government spending shocks in United States (US) over business cycle, while considering role partisan conflict. In particular, investigate whether conflict is relevant to differences fiscal multipliers expansionary and recessionary cycle phases upon impact annual shocks, using quarterly state-level data covering 1950:Q1 2016:Q4. We find new evidence that can vary with economic political conditions. The cumulated are strong persistent recessions when level low.
